Family Rooftop Tents

Built for bigger adventures together.
Planning a road trip with the whole crew? Family rooftop tents for 4–5 people are designed to give you more room, more comfort, and more freedom without towing a trailer or pitching multiple tents. Whether you’re heading into the Victorian High Country, coastal campgrounds, or remote bush tracks, these large rooftop tents turn your vehicle into a secure, elevated sleeping platform for the entire family. As your family grows in size (or independence), you can add annexes and inner tents to extend your sleeping arrangements.
Choose a family-sized rooftop tent for these reasons
Spacious Sleeping Area
Large rooftop tents feature expanded floor plans (often king-size or super-king) so everyone fits comfortably. No poles in your back. No uneven ground. Just a flat, supportive sleeping base above the elements. The iKamper Skycamp is a massive 2m wide "super-king" designed to accommodate up to four adults, so a young family of five is comfortable too. The iKamper X-Cover is a 1.9m wide "king" size, ultra light weight at only 58kg - designed and built for strength to accommodate 3-4 adults, great for a young family of four.

Fast Setup for Parents
iKamper Rooftop Tents are engineered for quick deployment, many open in under a minute. That means less time wrestling poles and more time enjoying campfire stories. It also means there's minimal stress about arrival times - the comfort level is the same anywhere, any terrain when your vehicle is the platform off the ground - arriving late to camp is less of a worry, knowing the set-up is easy, quick and the same every time. More important, is the ease of packing away - iKamper rooftop tents have been designed for effortless packing - room in the shells for bedding and tent fabrics, gas strut locations and choice of canvas and closing mechanisms make packing away and hitting the road the easiest on the market.

Elevated Safety for Kids
Sleeping off the ground keeps you away from mud, insects, snakes, and water pooling during rain. It also gives parents peace of mind knowing kids are secure inside a fully enclosed structure.

Built for Real Australian Weather
iKamper's premium family rooftop tents are made from breathable technical fabrics that balance airflow and insulation - essential for reducing condensation when more people sleep inside. Our 300gsm technical poly-cotton canvas does not require PU coatings and other linings that trap moisture, yet remain weather-proof. The technical canvas weave together with a 75D black fly create a dark environment for putting kids to sleep early, especially with longer summer days. The precision and strength in design creates a rigid tent formation with next to no wind noise from loose fabrics; quick rain/snow run-off; and, the high quality stainless steel hardware resist rusting for cleaner use and longevity.

Priorities when choosing the best rooftop tent for a family
Sleeping footprint
Aim for at least 180 cm wide for a family of four (young kids) and 200cm wide for a family of five

Weight rating
Ensure your roof rack + vehicle dynamic load supports the tent (we can provide guidance on suitable racking and RTT positioning)

Ventilation
Large mesh windows and breathable fabric reduce condensation that is primarily created by vapour from breathing during the night

Mattress thickness
5–10 cm high-density foam for proper sleep support - iKamper tents offer both insulated foam mats and Comfort Mats that self-inflate

Annex compatibility
Extra room for kids, gear, or changing space - our range of rooftop tents have annex attachments with multiple configurations for day-use and access, as well as enclosed sleeping space to accommodate more sleepers (or when the kids start to find their independence in teenage years)

Shell type
Hard shell tents will always provide an easier and faster setup and ideal for touring or frequent stops; soft shell tents often provide a more airy space, more economical price point and are great for extended camping stays - the iKamper X-Cover combines both in a patented design, we call a Hybrid. It's the only family tent of its kind with a hard top (no PVC cover) and incredibly only weighs 58kg.
Vehicle Compatibility Matters
Vehicle dynamic roof load rating
iKamper family rooftop tents (Skycamp and X-Cover) weigh only 75kg and 58kg respectively. When you add the weight of suitable roof-racking (eg 8-10kg), our tents are suitable for most mid-large family vehicle roof load capacities - both for safety and insurability. Compare this to Roof Space 4 at 90kg or AluCab RT-S4 at 127kg.

Roof rack system capacity
Family rooftop tents are side-opening tents (open out over the side of the vehicle, and you sleep across the car roof). Therefore, the width of the bed is in fact the length of the closed tent when the vehicle is moving. Not only is racking with a sufficient weight-rating required, but also the span of the racks (or the ability to add a third rack) is very important. We can help you determine this.

Mounting point strength
Roof racks (and how the math works) gets complicated - racks can be rated to a certain weight, but then reduce in capacity based on the way it is fitted to your specific vehicle make, model and year. It can reduce further, the further you go off bitumen!

Weight distribution across crossbars
This is important for both dynamic and static weight. For Dynamic, you want to evenly distribute the weight over your rack span to limit stress on racking and mounting points to the vehicle - for any roof-mounted tent (or cargo), this can is usually a pre-defined setting based on the vehicle or the racking manufacturer's guidance. For Static weight, which is a higher allowance (for vehicle and racking) you also want to ensure that any cantilever of the rooftop tent is managed with where family members sleep (eg, the smaller/lighter individuals sleep over the cantilever). This is not only best for your roof racking, but also for managing the family in the tent - having adults sleep in the middle of the tent (which is usually best supported by racking) also provides easier entry to - and exit - from the tent and ladder - adults will often go to bed later and rise earlier than the kids!
